I was going to write about my intrepid trip to Springfield, Oregon to Ken Kesey's house back in the seventies, but I'm postponing that until next time.

Last night it dawned on me that civilization has ended.  Do you know how most of the time you can't see things when you're too close to them?  I think that's what has happened to the world recently, and I also think that for some reason I got an insightful flash last night.  If I were the Reverend Jerry Falwell, I might think that God had spoken to me personally.  Since I'm not, it might be more attributable to an acid flashback, but insightful nonetheless.

"Things all slide, slide in all directions- won't be nothin' (nothin') you can measure anymore" and, after a series of chilling metaphors, "I have seen the future- it is murder."

Civilization, as we know it, did not end on September 11, 2001.  It ended the day the United States attacked Iraq.  A preemptive war by the defenders of civilization!  And early on, our government let the priceless artifacts from the cradle of civilization be destroyed without a qualm.  And we did it knowingly-our government didn't care.  We wanted them destroyed.  We are evil.

Then we approved torture, and took torture to new extremes.  We hid "ghost" detainees from the Red Cross.  Those are only the things that have been exposed.  Can you even fathom what we must have done that wasn't revealed?

In Iraq we murdered civilians and decimated and tortured families and said we were liberating them.

We let our government lie to us and the world time and time again and we reelected them.  And still we don't care.  Our attention span is no longer than the latest news headline.  The tsunami has been pushed to the back pages by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston's breakup.  After all, the tsunami had it's fifteen minutes of fame, and, as I noted in an earlier post, the people were brown and it was An Act of God.

We are going to attack Iran.  We are going to continue to attack.  We are going to continue to kill off all of those National Guardsmen and Reserves and Regular Army and blow off their arms and legs while piously thanking them for their service in defense of freedom.  Who can blame those poor parents for defending the war, how could they not?  And how strong are those who don't- those who lose children and husbands and stand up and question why.  They are the heros.

We are going to confirm as Attorney General the criminal who paved the way for Bush's regime of torture.  The King of the Blame Evaders, Donald Rumsfeld, didn't get sacked, he got four more years.  Dick "Fuck You" Cheney didn't even get censored; his evil genius is still in power. Condi Rice, the Bush Fucker, she of the "mushroom cloud hanging over America" is still lying even as she gets confirmed by the phonies in the Senate.  Only Barbara Boxer and Barack Obama have any balls.  Barack Obama is so smart.  He better be careful- they'll get rid of him.

Evil is in power and on the march.  Civilization is dead.  Civilization is a quaint concept.  It is every man for himself.  I have seen the future- it is murder!
